Coal Conveyor in High Temperature Environment

Application Description

A power plant has a coal conveyor located in a high temperature environment.  This conveyor feeds a boiler in the power plant, the steam from which powers turbines used for electric power generation.  If the conveyor stops abruptly, down time could be very costly due to lost electrical generation, extensive material clean up, and possible equipment damage.

Solution 1:  ZS10 Zero Speed Switch System

Mount a Magnetic Disk at the point of measure on the conveyor, align a Digital Output Hall Effect Sensor to the disk.  Wire the sensor to a ZS10 Zero Speed Switch Module which is located away from the high temperature zone.  When the conveyor stops abruptly, the ZS10 responds within 1 second enabling the conveyor ‘stop’ circuit reducing downtime and expense.

Solution 2:  T6 Industrial Tachometer

Mount a Magnetic Disk at the point of measure on the conveyor, align a Digital Output Hall Effect Sensor to the disk.  Wire the sensor to a T6 Tachometer which is located away from the high temperature zone.  When the conveyor stops abruptly, the T6 Tachometer responds promptly enabling the ‘stop’ circuit for the conveyor drive motor, minimizing down time and preventing the problem from compounding.

The T6 Tachometer’s 0-10V and/or 4-20mA feedback signal is sent to a PLC or DCS updating conveyor speed status.  This is particularly effective for early detection of a problem before it occurs.  If the speed begins to decrease, this can indicate an unwanted increase in the load on the conveyor.  When the 0-10V and/or 4-20mA signal reaches a particular level, the PLC or DCS can send an alert indicating a potential problem.

Early detection improves production significantly as conveyor problems are prevented from compounding, thus reducing downtime and expense.
